Treatment of Female Urinary Incontinence

Urinary Incontinence is a problem that affects a significant percentage of women worldwide. Urinary incontinence can negatively impact a patient’s quality of life and psychological well-being if proper medical assistance is not sought.

There are essentially 2 types of urinary incontinence:

  • Stress incontinence, where a patient loses urine during physical effort such as lifting weights, sneezing, coughing, etc.
  • Overactive bladder incontinence, where there is a sudden and intense urge to urinate without necessarily losing urine.

When indicated based on the case (e.g., if incontinence is due to anatomical abnormalities or injuries) or when pharmacological treatments have not been effective, urinary incontinence is treated surgically with various techniques such as the placement of tension-free vaginal tapes, urethral suspension, etc.

Treatment Benefits

  • Relief from symptoms: Reduction or complete elimination of urinary incontinence.
  • Improvement in quality of life: Return to daily activities and routines.
  • Increased self-confidence: Reduction of anxiety related to incontinence.

The most suitable surgical procedure for female urinary incontinence is determined by various factors and may include the placement of a support tape under the urethra or the use of other techniques such as urethral suspension.

In some cases, during cystoscopy, hyaluronic acid injection is applied to the relaxed sphincter muscle area to induce re-narrowing. Finally, when prolapse of the uterus or cystocele is present, these are usually corrected in the same procedure.

Depending on the case, the surgeon performs the operation under local or general anesthesia. The procedure lasts about 30 minutes to 1 hour, and women usually return home the same day. After the operation, rest and avoidance of intense physical activity for several weeks are recommended to ensure proper healing.

AT VF CLINICS

  • The treatment of urinary incontinence is carried out exclusively by specially trained doctors.
  • The treatment is personalized based on the individual case.
  • When surgery is necessary, we do not limit ourselves to a single invasive technique, but choose the most appropriate one.
  • The invasive procedures are completely safe.

The procedure is performed under anesthesia, so you will not feel pain during the process. After the procedure, there may be some discomfort, but the condition is generally manageable with painkillers.

The majority of women return to normal activities in 2-6 weeks, depending on their individual condition and the procedure performed.

Most women notice significant improvement or complete recovery from incontinence after the procedure. The success rates range from 70% to 90%, depending on the type of procedure and the individual case.
