In Vitro Fertilization: A Path to Motherhood

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a medical procedure that allows for the fertilization of an egg by sperm in a laboratory setting. This method provides an opportunity for couples facing fertility issues to have a child.

IVF is applied in many cases of infertility, which may involve damage to the fallopian tubes (such as blocked tubes, hydrosalpinges, etc.), hormonal disorders, ovulation problems, or even sperm deficiencies.

Additionally, IVF is recommended for women of advanced reproductive age or when other fertility methods have not been successful.

The process begins with the medicinal stimulation of the ovaries, where hormones are administered to produce multiple eggs, which will later be fertilized in the laboratory.

Next, egg retrieval takes place, during which the eggs are collected from the ovaries and isolated by embryologists to be preserved under suitable conditions in the laboratory.

The IVF method follows, where the eggs are fertilized by sperm in a laboratory setting, directly from the sperm, without the intervention of embryologists using any technical means.

In cases where it is necessary, such as when sperm quality is low in terms of quantity or motility, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is used, where a sperm cell is directly injected into the egg using technical assistance.

After fertilization, the embryos are cultured for several days in a specially designed embryology laboratory. In some cases, assisted hatching may be performed to facilitate implantation.

Finally, the embryo transfer is carried out, where the healthiest embryo is placed into the uterus, with the hope of a successful pregnancy.
