TUMMY TUCK SURGERY - ABDOMINOPLASTY
Tummy tuck (or else abdominoplasty) is a cosmetic surgery procedure to make the abdomen more firm and thinner.
It is usually sought by patients with stubborn fat in the middle and lower abdomen and sagging abdominal skin after major weight loss or pregnancy.
The surgery involves the removal of excess fat from the mid and lower abdomen, the tightening of sagging abdominal skin, and if necessary the repair of separated stomach muscles.
A tummy tuck should not be confused with a liposuction. However, the cosmetic surgeon may choose to perform liposuction procedure as part of a tummy tuck.

A tummy tuck can be performed with various surgical techniques; mini-tummy tuck, extended abdominoplasty, lipotuck or lipoabdominoplasty, high lateral tension tuck, etc.
The medical procedures involved, the number and length of incisions, the amount of fat removed, the extent of the surgery, and the way the muscle fascia wall is tightened, may vary depending on the case.
Two important factors that usually determine the surgical techique that should be used, include:
- the amount of fat and excess skin that needs to be removed,
- whether the patient’s abdominal muscles need to be repaired or not.
Tummy tuck surgery is performed under a general anesthetic, in order to ensure both maximal operating conditions and patient safety and comfort. A mini-tummy tuck might be completed between 1 – 2 hours, while a complete abdominoplasty can take from 1,5 – 5 hours. Usually, an overnight stay is required.
A candidate for a tummy tuck is usually someone who has loose skin that hangs down over the pubic area and tends to carry extra weight around his waist.
However, a candidate for abdominoplasty should have in mind that it is a major surgery, so it is important to thoroughly analyze the situation. Tummy tuck should not be used as an alternative to weight loss.
As with all surgeries, we follow specific medical protocols, e.g. we review the patient’s medical history, we conduct physical exams, medical tests, etc.
During your initial consultation, you will have the chance to talk about any concerns you may have with our experienced surgeon.
Recovery time may vary substantially depending on the surgery method used, and on the amount of tissue and skin removed. As a result, some women could be able to return to their work in a few days, while others might need up to 14 days after their procedure.
Generally, a woman should rest as much as possible for the first week, and then gradually increase her activities. For the first 2 weeks she should avoid some movements. Abdomen will feel sore, and she will experience some bruising and swelling.
The final abdominal appearance will be visible in 6 weeks.
Tummy tuck is frequently combined with liposuction (Lipotuck). It can also be combined with a thigh lift or a buttock lift (circumferential abdominoplasty), as well as with breast enhancement procedures (mommy makeover).
