OTOPLASTY
Otoplasty is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures, and is the only one allowed for aesthetic reasons on children over 6-7 years old.
Most often it is used to correct aesthetic deformities that were congenitally present, such as protruding ears, while there is also a small percentage of otoplasties performed for other reasons (restoration of the area after accidents, removal of punctures on the earlobe from earrings or piercing, etc.). The ears are classified as “protruding” when the angle formed between the ear flap and the head is well over 30 degrees.
The choice of the invasive method is directly related to the type of problem to be treated (e.g. large conch, shape of the antihelix, etc.).
The surgery is also performed on children, because the proportional size of the ears is almost finalized at the age of 6-7 years. Scientific research shows that about 5% of children worldwide are born with “protruding ears”.

Developments in modern plastic surgery have greatly improved the methods of otoplasty.
Thus, the incisions are now very small, while there are also techniques that are almost atraumatic (placement of special sutures to hold the cartilage in a new position).
The invasive method to be applied is chosen depending on the deformity of the ears, the thickness of the cartilage, the size of the flap conch, etc., always aiming at the optimal aesthetic result.
In all cases, the procedure is performed under mild sedation and local anesthesia, and lasts about 1.5 to 2 hours. The incision is usually sutured with an absorbable suture, so that it does not need to be removed.
After the procedure, a protective bandage is applied for a short period of time. Any minor bruising or swelling subsides very quickly, within a few days.
The aesthetic results of otoplasty are permanent, and the procedure has a very positive impact on the psychology of the individual.
The procedure concerns women, men, but also children older than 6-7 years old, with protruding ears or other types of ear deformity.
In all cases, the procedure can be performed under local anesthesia and mild sedation.
The procedure takes 1.5 – 2 hours, depending on the case.
The technique used depends on the type of deformity and medical factors evaluated by the surgeon.
During your visit, you will have the opportunity to raise all your concerns with the doctor, and learn any details related to the change you wish to make and the procedure.
The patient returns home a few hours after the procedure.
Modern otoplasty techniques have greatly reduced the degree of discomfort. Postoperative pain is mild and is treated with simple painkillers.
Following the procedure, a protective bandage (dressing) is applied for about a week. After the bandage is removed, an elastic bandage is needed as a precautionary measure at bedtime (for 15-20 days).
Any minor bruising or swelling subsides very quickly.
Until full healing has taken place, it is recommended that the patient avoids participating in sports to avoid injury, using headphones or any other device that presses on the ear (phone handset, mobile phone), and prolonged exposure to the sun.
The cost depends on the nature of the problem, and the technique to be used.
At VF Laser Clinics we treat the problem in a completely individualized way, in order to reduce the costs for the patient as much as possible.
Modern otoplasty techniques offer incomparable advantages, such as the natural result and the extremely short postoperative stage.
It is one of the few plastic surgery procedures in which the aesthetic result remains unchanged for life.
