Colposcopy

Colposcopy is a diagnostic procedure used to evaluate the cervix and vaginal walls.

It allows gynecologists to closely examine the tissue in the area for any abnormalities or pathological conditions, such as dysplasia or cervical cancer. This examination is typically performed if the results of the Pap smear test show abnormalities.

During the examination, a special instrument called a colposcope is used. The lenses of the colposcope allow for multiple magnifications of the image. Additionally, the colposcope has built-in lighting and special filters that help detect details, making it easier to assess the condition of the tissue.

The benefits of the examination

  • Accurate assessment: It allows for a detailed examination of the cervix and vaginal walls.
  • Early diagnosis: Identifies abnormalities at an early stage before they develop into serious conditions.
  • Guidance for treatment: Helps the doctor design the appropriate treatment.

Colposcopy is performed in a medical setting and typically lasts 10-15 minutes. The doctor asks the patient to lie on a special examination bed, similar to when undergoing a Pap smear test.

Next, the colposcope is inserted into the vagina so the doctor can carefully examine the cervix and vaginal walls for any abnormalities. The procedure is generally painless.

The specialized gynecologist will decide if tissue samples (biopsy) need to be taken for further analysis, considering both the colposcopic findings and the results of previous tests (such as the Pap smear, HPV test, etc.).

ΣΤΑ VF CLINICS

  • There is no pain after the examination.

Colposcopy is painless if performed with the correct medical technique. The procedure lasts about 10-15 minutes.

Regarding biopsies:

  • Biopsies taken from the cervix are painless. If larger tissue samples are taken, local anesthesia is administered.
  • Biopsies from the upper third of the vagina are also painless.
  • For biopsies taken from the middle and lower third of the vagina, local anesthesia is given, so the patient does not experience pain in these cases either.
  • In rare cases, vaginal discharge or mild bleeding may occur after the examination.
  • If a colposcopic biopsy is taken, it is recommended to abstain from sexual activity for one week after the procedure.

The examination should be done on a day when you are not menstruating. It is advisable to avoid vaginal douching, tampons, or sexual intercourse 24-48 hours before the examination.
Also, if there is inflammation in the lower genital system, it would be best to avoid colposcopy until the treatment is completed.

The results of the colposcopy are usually available within a few days.
